How ammonium polyphosphate works together with melamine and pentaerythritol in intumescent coatings?

In fireproof coatings, the interaction among ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol, and melamine is crucial for achieving the desired fire-resistant properties.

Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is widely used as a flame retardant in various applications, including fireproof coatings. When exposed to high temperatures, APP releases phosphoric acid, which reacts with the free radicals produced during the combustion process. This reaction leads to the formation of a dense and protective char layer, which acts as a barrier to prevent heat and oxygen transfer, thus slowing down the spread of flames.

Pentaerythritol is a polyol compound that functions as both a carbon source and a charring agent. It decomposes when exposed to heat, producing volatile compounds such as carbon dioxide and water vapor. These volatile compounds dilute the oxygen concentration and inhibit the combustion reaction, while the remaining carbon residue forms a stable char layer that protects the substrate from further heat transfer.

Melamine, a nitrogen-rich compound, contributes to the fire-resistant properties of coatings. When melamine is heated, it releases nitrogen gas, which plays a significant role in fire suppression. The released nitrogen helps to displace oxygen, reducing the oxidizing atmosphere around the flames, and thus inhibiting the combustion process.

Together, the interaction among these elements combines the effects of phosphorus, carbon, and nitrogen to enhance the fire resistance of coatings. The ammonium polyphosphate acts as a flame retardant, forming a protective char layer. Pentaerythritol contributes to carbonization, producing more char to shield against heat. Finally, melamine releases nitrogen gas to create a fire-suppressing atmosphere. By working in conjunction, these three elements efficiently delay ignition and slow down the rate of flame spread, making fireproof coatings safer and more effective protection against fire hazards.
