New SVHC List published by ECHA

As of October 16, 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has updated the list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). This list serves as a reference for identifying hazardous substances within the European Union (EU) that pose potential risks to human health and the environment.
ECHA has added a total of 10 substances to the SVHC candidate list that are now subject to authorization under the EU REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations.
These substances include:
Bisphenol S (BPS): Best known for its use in thermal paper, BPS has been identified as an endocrine disruptor and has raised concerns about its potential effects on human health.
Quinoline: Used in a variety of industries including rubber manufacturing and industrial chemistry, quinoline has been classified as a carcinogen, posing a potential risk to humans and the environment.
Benzo[a]pyrene: Benzo[a]pyrene is considered a carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon commonly found in industrial processes and tobacco smoke.
1,4-dioxane: 1,4-dioxane is found in cosmetics, detergents, and other household products and poses a potential risk to human health as a possible carcinogen.1,2-Dichloroethane: Used in the production of solvents and various chemicals, this substance has been identified as a potential carcinogen and mutagen.

Diisohexyl phthalate (DIHP): DIHP, commonly used in plastic manufacturing, has been classified as a reproductive toxicant, raising concerns about its potential impact on fertility.

Disodium octaborate: Disodium octaborate is widely used as a flame retardant and preservative in a variety of products, including wood and textiles, and has raised concerns due to its potential reproductive toxicity.
Phenanthrene: A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, phenanthrene is present in industrial processes and combustion emissions and has been classified as a carcinogen.
Sodium dichromate: Used in the production of pigments, corrosion inhibitors and anti-corrosion coatings, sodium dichromate is a known skin and respiratory sensitizer, posing a potential risk to human health and the environment.
Triclosan: Often used in personal care products such as soap and toothpaste, triclosan is known for its antibacterial properties but has raised concerns about its potential impact on human health and the environment.
The inclusion of these substances on the SVHC Candidate List indicates their potential hazard and triggers regulatory procedures to control their use within the EU. We urge stakeholders and interested parties to stay informed about these substances and their potential impacts as further regulatory action may be taken in the future.
