Flame retardants are essential additives used in various materials, particularly plastics, to reduce flammability and enhance fire safety. These compounds release water vapor when heated, which cools the material and dilutes flammable gases. They are often used in applications where safety is paramount, such as in electrical and electronic devices. While they are less effective at lower temperatures compared to halogenated or phosphorus-based retardants, their safety profile makes them a preferred choice in many applications.

Intumescent flame retardants are unique in that they expand when exposed to heat, forming a protective char layer that insulates the underlying material from flames. This type of flame retardant typically consists of a combination of a carbon source, an acid source, and a blowing agent. When heated, the acid source catalyzes the carbon source to form a char, while the blowing agent creates gas bubbles that expand the char layer. This mechanism provides excellent fire protection and is often used in coatings and flexible plastics.

While flame retardants play a crucial role in enhancing fire safety, their use raises significant environmental and health concerns. Many halogenated flame retardants have been linked to adverse health effects, including endocrine disruption and developmental issues. As a result, regulatory bodies are increasingly restricting their use. In contrast, phosphorus and inorganic flame retardants are generally considered safer alternatives, although ongoing research is necessary to fully understand their long-term impacts.
